During the 1990s, some emigrants asked the Municipality of Ribeira Grande to do something where they could show the history of Azorean communities and Azorean emigration. During these years the idea was ascertaining up until arriving to 2005.

On September 9, 2005 was inaugurated the Azorean Emigration Museum, in the former premises of the Fish Shed.
